What is alcoholism?

Alcoholism (or alcohol dependency) is a chronic and progressive condition characterised by a compulsive need to consume alcohol despite adverse consequences. It’s not simply a matter of drinking too much or too often, but rather a mixture of psychological, biological, and social factors that contribute to a person’s inability to control their drinking.

Alcoholism can lead to physical health problems, mental health issues, relationship difficulties, and even legal problems. It can also impact a person’s work, finances, and overall quality of life.

Recognising the signs of alcoholism is the first step towards seeking help and recovery. Common symptoms include an inability to stop drinking despite wanting to, experiencing withdrawal symptoms when attempting to cut down or quit, prioritising alcohol consumption over other responsibilities and activities, and continuing to drink despite negative consequences.

If you or someone you care about is struggling with alcoholism, know that you are not alone, and that help is available.
